It's not too bad. I usually can't stand ads, but this doesn't interfere with the quality of the app. You can also, if you double-text, click the little "x" in the corner of the ad to view the keyboard again. You get your notifications as always. Text free also can text you personally when you have updates or to remind you that if your phone number isn't used within a certain amount of time, it will be given to someone else.
But anyone that uses this app usually uses it frequently and doesn't have the issue. It only happened to me a few years back when I only got the app to text my mom for a busy month, and right after that I didn't use it.
